About the project

From Witness to Visual Cognition

This project started with an unexpected moment of inspiration. As a fan of Katy Perry, I was listening to Witness while brainstorming ideas. The song’s themes of connection and understanding sparked a creative link to visual cognition. Its lyrics provided a natural way to structure and present key course concepts.

Nearly every lyric aligned with a core idea in visual cognition. For instance:

  • "Can I get a witness" relates to feature processing, where the brain detects colors and textures.

  • "Will you be my witness" reflects the visual processing hierarchy, showing the interaction between bottom-up and top-down processing.

  • "We're all just looking for connection" ties into Gestalt principles, illustrating how we perceive patterns.

Using the song as a guiding thread, I aimed to present complex scientific ideas in a relatable way. The lyrics provided both structure and emotional depth, making the concepts easier to remember for a general audience.

This project deepened my appreciation for the role of visual cognition in everyday life. The course not only enhanced my understanding of how we see and interpret information but also demonstrated the power of combining science with creativity. It showed that even a pop song can inspire meaningful insights into how we perceive the world.
